Expert Witnesses in Canada: A Survey of Canadian Litigators 2009

Expert witnesses have long played an important role in Canadian litigation. As individuals possessing special education, training, qualifications, and experience, experts are permitted to provide their professional opinion in court or in arbitration. The expert’s role is to assist the court or arbitration with complicated or technical matters that are not within the understanding of the typical person.

Expert Witnesses in Canada: A survey of Canadian Litigators 2009 is based on a survey of Canadian litigators. This report is based on over 195 responses and relates experiences around the selection and use of experts, with a focus on accounting experts. The results provide useful information on how, when, and why experts are retained across Canada and how they are used.
